Marcus Hayes earns MW defensive player of the week honors

Redshirt freshman Marcus Hayes received Mountain West Conference defensive player of the week honors for his two-interception performance on Saturday in UNM’s 42-25 victory over in-state rival New Mexico State.

Hayes, a native of Rockford, Illinois, was clutch down the stretch with both of his interceptions coming in the fourth quarter to help New Mexico keep the lead. Hayes’ second interception proved to be a game-clinching 60-yard pick-six with less than a minute left in the game.

According to UNM’s official team website, Hayes’ 148 return yards off his two interceptions are a school record.

The Lobos head into a bye this week with a 2-1 record with wins over Incarnate Word and New Mexico State. They continue the 2018 regular season with a home game against Liberty at DreamStyle Stadium on September 29th.
