The final two games of a three-game series against the visiting Air Force Falcons have been postponed by the University of New Mexico due to the tragic death of junior Jackson Weller.
According to UNM spokeswoman Cinnamon Blair in a report by the Albuquerque Journal, Weller was shot outside a popular Nob Hill club early Saturday morning. Weller was taken to the hospital just after 2:00 am and was later pronounced dead.
“He was a very special young man whose absence will be deeply felt. On behalf of Lobo Athletics and The University of New Mexico, I would like to extend our sincerest condolences to his family, friends, teammates and all who knew him – please keep them in your thoughts and prayers,” Athletic Director Eddie Nuñez said in a release.
“Our immediate focus will be on continuing to support all who are affected as they cope with this senseless tragedy.”
Per the Journal report, APD is investigating the apparent homicide, but no suspects have been identified.
