CAUGHT ON THE WEB: Local Prep Standout Makes SI ... The Sooner 'Stache

Did the NFL schedule makers have a hand in putting former Lobos WR Hank Baskett in a Colts uniform?

As you probably saw, the Philadelphia Eagles cut Baskett earlier this week. A few days later Baskett, who's probably more known for being the husband of former Playmate Kendra Wilkinson, signed with Indianapolis.

But according to this Baltimore Sun blog, the Ravens had their sites on Baskett too. In fact, Ravens coach Jim Harbaugh told the Sun that Baskett might have ended up in Baltimore if it wasn't for the Colts favorable schedule. Indy plays Monday, giving them more opportunity to work Baskett into the gameplan, thus get him activated and paid. Baltimore plays Sunday and might not have had the transition completed in time.

At quarterback for the Sooners, your huckleberry.

Landry Jones' mustache has earned him the nickname, "Doc Holiday" from OU tight end Brody Eldridge, according to the Tulsa World. You might remember Val Kilmer's version of the wild west icon uttering the famous line, "I'm your huckleberry."

Thanks to his fresh mustache, Jones, the Artesia product, has apparently drawn some lighthearted criticism.

"It's different. That's his style. If he wants to rock it, he can I guess," OU center Ben Habern told the newspaper. "I'll give him a thumbs-up because he's playing good right now. If we keep winning with it, that's fine with me."

"Can't replace a Brian Urlacher. Can't do it,. We can't expect one guy to go in there and do what he does on the field, off the field, in the locker room. It just can't happen, so the responsibility falls on the whole building."

-- Bears quarterback Jay Cutler to USA Today

  • golfer Nancy Lopez
  • Lobos basketball coach Steve Alford
  • former Lobos football coach Marv Levy

And finally ...

Check out this MLB.com article on former Carlsbad High standout Cody Ross.

Florida Marlins outfield coach thinks Ross is worthy of a Gold Glove.

Said Ross to MLB.com: "Looking at the big picture, I don't think there are three other outfielders in the National League who are better than him defensively."
