CAUGHT ON THE WEB: Miami Cuts Former Rio Rancho Star

Chris Williams found out first hand how fragile NFL life can be.

Williams, the former Rio Rancho High and NMSU star receiver, was waived by the Miami Dolphins this morning after suffering an injury and a less-than-stellar performance in Saturday's preseason game.

How mercurial has Williams' career as a Dolphin been? It was just a week ago that he wowed fans when he averaged more than 32 yards per kickoff return in the preseason opener against Jacksonville. Now he's gone.

Don't expect Williams' NFL chance to be over. He wasn't drafted -- in today's article about the cut, South Florida Sun-Sentinel writer Mike Berardino notes Williams impressed Dolphins brass by sending a self-made highlight tape -- so a player like Williams doesn't have much of a chance to stay on the roster if he gets hurt.

Berardino also wrote this ...

Provided Williams passes through waivers, he would likely spend this season on injured reserve with the Dolphins. Fellow receiver Brennan Marion (knee surgery) already took that route earlier in training camp.

Williams should be back. Somewhere.

Speaking of NFL players with local ties ...

Check out this quote by former Cibola standout Alan Branch that appeared in the Arizona Republic. Branch lost 25 pounds when he reported to the Cardinals' picturesque camp in Flagstaff, Ariz. because he doesn't want to be inactive for 12 games as he was last season.

"I don't want to watch a game in a Polo this season," he said. "This is the longest I've gone without playing in my life. I'm definitely trying to be a starter, but I'm not the coach. I'm not the boss."

A Baseball America expert had kind words for former Academy baseball standout Max Walla, who was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers this season. Check it out.

"I liked (the Brewers) draft a lot. Their top three picks—Arnett, Davis and Heckathorn—were good talent values for where they went. Max Walla can really hit, they spent to add Brooks Hall's upside in the fourth round and Del Howell was a steal in the 15th round. Ditto for Scooter Gennett in the 16th."

Quick note about The Locker Room with Bob Brown ...

Next Monday afternoon Texas A&M coach Mike Sherman will be on to talk about his team's opener agaisnt the Lobos. Check it out.
