Lobos clean up MWC basketball awards
When a team has a surprisingly successful season, there usually aren't many surprises when it comes to postseason awards.
UNM, a young team pegged fifth in the Mountain West Conference's preseason poll, just won the league's regular seson title. Today the MWC announced that several Lobos got more laurels (see the complete list of honorees here).
COACH OF THE YEAR: Steve Alford (He's won this twice in three years at UNM, and is also one of 15 finalists for the Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year award).
PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Darington Hobson (He's the third Lobo to receive the honor, joining Ruben Douglas and J.R. Giddens. Neither of those players went to the NCAA Tournament).
NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR: Hobson
ALL-MWC, FIRST TEAM: Hobson, Dairese Gary
ALL -MWC, SECOND TEAM: Roman Martinez
ALL-MWC, HONORABLE MENTION: Phillip McDonald
ALL-MWC, DEFENSIVE TEAM: Gary (He and UNLV's Tra'Von Willis were the only first-team players on the defensive list.
I'd like to know how close Hobson and BYU's Jimmer Fredette were in the voting for POY, but other than that this played out as me and several others anticipated.
