State Tournament, Day 1
The first day of the 2010 State Basketball Championships did not end well for metro area schools.
Across the five classes there were nine local schools taking the court. After today, only two remain -- Class 5A's Eldorado and Sandia.
Here are the scores involving local teams ...
CLASS 5A
- No. 1 Eldorado 54, No. 8 La Cueva 46
- No. 3 Las Cruces 51, No. 6 Cibola 40
- No. 2 Sandia 33, No. 7 Valley 23
CLASS 4A
- No. 1 Kirtland Central 44, No. 8 Del Norte 32
- No. 3 Roswell 59, No. 6 Volcano Vista 23
CLASS 3A
- No. 2 Santa Fe Indian 62, No. 7 Hope Christian 42
CLASS 2A
- No. 2 Santa Rosa 54, No. 7 Estancia 23
NOTES: The best individual performance I saw today came from Mystica Perez of Lovington. She scored 35 of her team's 61 points (a career high) as the Lady Wildcats knocked defending champion Pojoaque Valley.
The Class 3A girls bracket had the only significant upsets. Not only did Lovington, a No. 6 seed, oust No. 3 Pojoaque Valley, but No. 9 St. Mike's edged top seed Portales.
... Lobos standout and All-American Darington Hobson made a short appearance at the Pit this afternoon after an impromptu Lobos practice. He signed a few autographs, chatted to a few fans and left.
