State Tournament, Day 4 ... Plus state final previews
On the penultimate (haven't got to use that one in a while) day of the state tournament metro area schools went 2-1. No big surprises.
Here are the scores, with a few notes (all are boys games) ...
CLASS 2A
- No. 1 Mesilla Valley 63, No. 4 Bosque School 52 -- The Bobcats' Jonathan Allison had 16 points, five rebounds and four assists.
CLASS 3A
- No. 1 Hope Christian 66, No. 5 St. Michael's 42 -- This one was competitive for a quarter, then the Huskies, maybe the best team in the state regardless of class, outscored the Horsemen 40-18 in the second and third quarters. ... Hope's Arren Wells posted 18 points, 12 rebounds and two assists.
- No. 2 Sandia Prep 56, No. 3 Santa Fe Indian -- There was no match for Kody Salcido. He netted 24 points, 11 rebounds and three assists.
We finish Year 2 of our state hoops tournament coverage with three championship games live from The Pit. Here's a preview of each ...
BOYS CLASS 3A
WHO: No. 2 Sandia Prep vs. No. 1 Hope Christian
TIPOFF: 12:30 p.m.
SKINNY: If there's a Class 3A team that can derail the Huskies bid for back-to-back titles, it's the Sundevils. Sandia Prep has the size thanks to 6-5 junior post Kody Salcido. But the Huskies have beaten the Sundevils in all three meetings this season by an average of eight points per game. Expect them to win again.
HISTORY: In his illustrious career, Hopc coach Jim Murphy is 8-1 in state title games ... Sandia Prep is playing in its first state final.

GIRLS CLASS 5A
WHO: No. 2 Sandia vs. No. 1 Eldorado
TIPOFF: 2:30 p.m.
SKINNY: These two clearly have been the best in the state this season. The Eagles beat the Matadors twice, by an average of nine points per game. Eldorado has the Gatorade Player of the Year in Kya De Garmo.
HISTORY: The Eagles have a rich history of state championships, going 14-5 in the final. But Eldo hasn't been since 1996, when it lost to Sandia. The Eagles haven't won a championship till 1995 when Don Flanagan was their coach. Eldorado is 2-1 in championship games vs. Sandia.

BOYS CLASS 5A
WHO: No. 5 La Cueva vs. No. 2 Mayfield
TIPOFF: 8:15 p.m.
SKINNY: The Trojans are a grinding, bruising team that has two effective inside players in Josh Trujillo (6-foot-6) and Jeremiah Willis (6-5). But La Cueva has size too and more athletic guards.
HISTORY: For all its football glory, Mayfield has never won a boys basketball title (0-2). Trojans coach Tommy Morrow has, winning two at Hot Springs. ... La Cueva's Frank Castillo, who is on track to be the winningest coach in Albuquerque history, is 4-5 in state title games. La Cueva is 4-3.
