College baseball: Lobos vs. Aggies
Football season was, to put it kindly, a disaster at UNM and NMSU this season.
Basketball season for the Lobos and Aggies was markedly better, especially for UNM, but both teams still watched their season end with a heartbreaking last shot.
However, both Lobo and Aggie fans might find comfort this spring.
Baseball teams at both schools are having historic seasons. Here's a brief look ...

22-3 (best start since 1973) 50 (according to WarrenNolan.com) For the first time since 1985, the Lobos are ranked in the Baseball America Top 25. UNM comes in a No. 21. UNM is also ranked (20th) in the Collegiate Baseball Top 30. The Lobos are receiving votes in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll. The one aspect dulling UNM's otherwise brilliant start has been their schedule. There are 302 teams playing Division I baseball and UNM's schedule is ranked 208th. The Lobos do have a two-game sweep of a former top 10 team, Texas A&M, to brag about, but many of their other wins have come against four teams with an RPI of 200 or greater. Ryan Honeycutt, from Las Cruces High, (leads nation with .534 average) ... As a team, UNM leads the nation in batting average, hits, doubles and triples. The Lobos face BYU for a three-game series starting Saturday at 6 p.m. |

21-3 (best start ever) 123 The Aggies haven't cracked the Baseball America poll, but aren't far behind the Lobos in the Collegiate Baseball Top 30. NMSU is ranked 24th in that poll. Like the Lobos, the Aggies are also receiving votes in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll. Somehow the Aggies schedule has been softer than that of the Lobos. NMSU's schedule is ranked 294th toughest. That means only eight teams have had an easier slate. NMSU did split its season series with UNM and took two of three from San Francisco, its only other opponent with a top 100 RPI. Heading into today, NMSU has played only twice outside of Las Cruces. Heading into this week, NMSU's Jeff Farnham lead the WAC in batting average (.430) ... NMSU leads the nation in home runs, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. The Aggies finish a two-game series at UT-Brownsville tonight at 5 p.m. |
