AMBER BATTLE and ROLANDO TRAMMEL
For the season's final Safeco Insurance / Insurance Exchange Student Athlete of the Week, we have two honories: Amber Battle of Cibola and Highland's Rolando Trammel.
Battle is sophomore, who won the 100 and 200 at Class 5A state track meet, remaining undefeated in those events all season. She's a two-sport athlete who also excels on the hardwood for the Cougars.
Trammel is a senior who won the 200, 110-hurdles, long jump and triple jump at Class 5A state track meet, becoming high-point athlete for the second year in a row. He's also a two-sport athlete, punting and catching passes on the Hornets' football team.
Rio Rancho High sophomore Blake Swihart is this week's Safeco Insurance / Insurance Exchange Student High School Athlete of the Week. Swihart helped the Rams go 3-0 with his performances at the plate.
He was 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBI in the Rams 11-0 win at Manzano on March 23. Two days later against Roswell, Swihart had five RBI in Rio Rancho's 8-0 victory. Swihart capped his week March 28 going 2 for 4 with an RBI in Rio Rancho's 10-3 win over Rio Grande for the Sal Puentes Invitatational championship.
Don't be surprised if this week's Safeco Insurance / Insurance Exchange Student Athlete of the Week becomes a regular here.
Kelsey Stevens, a standout La Cueva pitcher, is just a freshman but she already has a lengthy resume. Kelsey added to it last Saturday with a two-hitter against Albuquerque High. She's now 6-0 this season with a sub-1.00 ERA.
Kelsey was the first 13-year-old ever to pitch for the Albuquerque 18-U Sun Dancers, a local club team that has been around for more than a quarter century. She is being scouted by several Division I colleges including UNM, Stanford, Alabama, Mississippi State and Texas A&M.
Academy's Curtis Beach made this week's pick an easy one.
Beach, a senior, set a national decathlon scoring record at the Arcadia Invitational in California on April 9-10. Beach won nine of the 10 events, scoring 7,909 points and breaking a record that stood for 16 years.
Beach set personal records in five of the events and won by more than 1,500 points.
Missy Martinez's latest no-hitter was enough to earn the Cibola senior the Safeco Insurance/Insurance Exchange Student Athlete of the Week.
Martinez, who has led the Cougars to back-to-back Class 5A state softball titles, notched her fifth no-hitter Thursday against district rival West Mesa. As of Monday, the Cougars are 18-2. Martinez has a .087 ERA and 222 strike outs this season. She's also hitting .321.
The La Cueva baseball team moved into the top 10 of the Baseball America High School Top 25 this week.
A big reason: Mitchell Garver, this week's Student Athlete of the Week.
In the latest Albuquerque Journal statistics, Garver ranks second in Class 5A in batting average (.559) and home runs (eight). He leads the state's largest classification in RBI with 36.
This week's honoree is Del Norte pitcher Amber Tracy. She won a pair of games for the Knights against rival Albuquerque Academy, allowing a combined nine hits in the two wins. She was also 5-for-8 at the plate during the sweep.
