TEAM EFFORT SPURS LAST-MINUTE ALL STAR GAME

The inaugural Senior Charity Allstar Classic didn't even have a venue until about two weeks ago.

Players? Those came even later. Rosters only have been finalized for a little more than a week.

But the Senior Charity Allstar Classic still came together thanks to teamwork and a common sense of generosity.

Longtime girls basketball coach Bob McIntyre wanted another all-star game for players and he wanted to give to a charity. During the season he met with Tony Otero, Rio Rancho Dairy Queen owner; Joe Sheville or the New Mexico National Guard and Jay Hill of Graphic Connection to discuss the idea.

Then Rio Rancho Mayor Tom Swisstack got involved.

"He was organizing a youth mayor and youth city council," McIntyre said. "They were looking for a project."

Eventually KQTM-FM (101.7 The Team) came aboard.

McIntyre's biggest break didn't come until after his Rams beat Valley at the Santa Ana Star Center in the second round of the Class 5A state tournament. It was then that Joe Cordova, a Santa Ana Star Center official, told McIntyre that his group could use the area.

"He asked me how many spotlights we wanted," McIntyre said. "We just wanted to use the floor."

McIntyre said the Santa Ana Star Center might be the biggest sponsor. It isn't charging the Senior Charity Allstar Classic to use the facilities.

Organizers wanted to minimize costs, McIntyre said, and they seemed to have accomplished that -- with a lot of help.

Local basketball official Kevin Sweeney found seven other officials to work the game for free. The boys and girls game will have three on-court officials, an official timer and a scorekeeper.

The Metro Basketball Coaches Association donated $2,000 to the event. As is common with all-star events, players pay a $50 fee to participate. McIntyre said many players' admission was paid by their respective program's booster club.

Said McIntyre: "We've raised about $5,000 before tip off."

He hopes that, even with the low ticket prices, the game can generate about $7,500.

It's all going to UNM Children's Hospital.

Unlike other all-star events, the Senior Charity Allstar Classic hasn't divided the players geographically (teammates from Highland and Manzano will play on opposing sides in the boys game). Players were distributed for the sake of competitive balance. And officials didn't select a player from every area team. McIntyre wanted a true all-star game. He knows there might be a few complaints about which players were selected. But McIntyre knows that's is part of all-star games.

Fans might notice that the game's coaches are all assistants. That was done intentionally, McIntyre said, to give hard working assistant coaches a chance to be "in front."

Fans also might notice that the game will have the look of old NBA All-Star games because each player will be wearing their own high school's uniform (one team in light and other other in dark jerseys). That was done to cut costs.

Said McIntyre: "Hopefully this can become an annual event."
