UNM Baseball: Lobos split two-game series with No. 6 Texas Tech

The University of New Mexico baseball team split a two-game series with No. 6 Texas Tech on Wednesday after falling 27-15 in a lopsided contest at Santa Ana Star Field.

Although the final score ended with UNM on the short side of a big win for Texas Tech, the Lobos showed some moxie by scoring nine unanswered runs to overcome an early 11-5 deficit against the Red Raiders.

Third baseman Carl Stajduhar continued his excellent 2017 campaign with seven RBI and two runs scored, including a RBI single in the fifth inning to tie the game at eleven.

Jared Mang, Hayden Schilling, and Daniel Herrera each notched three hits in the game for UNM, with the Lobos posting 18 hits 46 at-bats against a tough Texas Tech pitching staff.

But the solid offensive display by UNM would not be enough to overcome the potent bats of the Red Raiders, as Texas Tech would score 16 unanswered runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings to put the game well out of reach.

“Sometimes you’re the windshield, and sometimes you’re the bug,” UNM coach Ray Birmingham said via GoLobos.com after the game. “That’s just the way it goes sometimes.”

Although the game ended in a negative fashion for UNM, splitting a home series against a top ten team should give the Lobos some confidence heading into a critical three-game tilt against Mountain West Conference foe San Diego State this weekend.

The Lobos hold a one-game advantage over the Aztecs in the MWC regular season standings.
