Sometimes things happen in sports that defy explanation. Sometimes, the other team wants it more.
Most times, though, it comes down to being outplayed.
It’s hard to say which of these things was the deciding factor in the Lobo (13-3, 2-1) loss to San José State last week. After surrendering a 14 point lead, the Lobos had to claw their way back from an 18 point deficit. The Lobos had the lead late but were unable to finish off the comeback.
With 5.8 seconds remaining, Richard Washington put the Spartans for good after hitting the seventh 3-pointer of the night.
Maybe UC Davis showed everyone how the Lobos could be beaten.
No matter the case, Paul Weir and his team are looking for redemption against Fresno State (5-10, 1-3).
The team is still without JJ Caldwell, but Carlton Bragg is set to potentially make his return after being reinstated from his suspension. If he is able to play, he will provide an immediate impact to the Lobo lineup. Although the team has gone 2-1 during his absence, they haven’t looked the same without his presence on the court.
Guard Vance Jackson had his best game of the season against the Spartans, lighting up the stat sheet to the tune of 25 points and 13 rebounds. If Jackson can put together another strong performance, he will create mismatches for the Bulldogs and open up opportunities for JaQuan Lyle.
Fresno State is another team that can shoot from behind the arc. While not nearly as deadly as UC Davis is, they are converting 32.9% of their attempts this season. Senior guard New Williams has accounted for 33 conversions and is someone that will need to be accounted for.
Tuesday’s game is scheduled for a 9:00 p.m. tip-off from Dreamstyle Arena. The game will be nationally televised on ESPNU.
