UNM Baseball: Lobos host Northern Colorado in home opener

The University of New Mexico Lobos returned home from Surprise, Arizona, with a 2-2 record in the Sanderson Ford College Baseball Classic.

UNM fell to No. 25 Oregon State 11-4 on Valentine’s Day but bounced back with a pair of wins over BYU in a double-header on Saturday, February 15th. Junior starting pitcher Aaron Makil threw six scoreless innings of three-hit baseball to earn the first win of the season for the Lobos, while Payton Strambler shut the door on the Cougars with three scoreless innings to earn the save.

Makil earned Mountain West Conference player of the week honors for his stellar performance.

Junior catcher Shane Podsednik leads the team in batting average and hits after the first four games of the season, with a .571 batting average. Justin Watari leads the team in total bases and RBI (5), despite just three hits in his first 16 at-bats.

The Lobos kick off their 2020 home schedule against the Northern Colorado Bears in a three-game series this weekend at Santa Ana Star Field.

The Bears enter the series with a 2-2 record with a pair of wins over Houston Baptist University. Their two losses came against Texas Tech by a combined score of 36-7.

Catcher Josh Glenn leads UNC with a .364 batting average, with two home runs, six RBI, and 11 total bases in 11 at-bats. Glenn is one of two players with two home runs on the year, with a total of seven long balls by the Bears in 2020.

By comparison, the Lobos have just one home run on the year – a solo shot by designated hitter Ediberto Reyes against Oregon State.
