Lobo Round Up – Basketball falters against Boise, Golf finishes fifth in invitational

The University of New Mexico Lobos experienced a week of mixed results across their athletics programs. Here’s a closer look at each team’s performance:

Men’s Basketball (21-8, 9-7 Mountain West Conference)

Boise State Hands UNM Second Consecutive Loss: The Lobos faced a tough road test against the Boise State Broncos and fell 89-79. This loss snapped a two-game winning streak and marked the first time this season UNM has lost consecutive games. Despite the defeat, freshman phenom JT Toppin continued his impressive campaign, leading the team in scoring with 21 points on a highly efficient 9-of-12 shooting from the field. He also grabbed 8 rebounds and swatted away 3 shots on the defensive end. However, the Broncos proved too strong in the second half, outscoring UNM by 12 points and pulling away for the victory. This loss puts a dent in the Lobos’ hopes of securing the Mountain West Conference title, but they’ll look to regroup and bounce back in their upcoming games.

Freshman Sensation Toppin Earns Another Freshman of the Week Award: Even in defeat, Toppin’s performance couldn’t be ignored. His scoring prowess and well-rounded play were acknowledged as he was awarded his ninth Mountain West Freshman of the Week honor. This recognition cements his status as a future star and a critical piece of the Lobos’ success this season.

Lobo baseball has tough go against Texas Tech

Lobos Battle No. 17 Texas Tech in Midweek Matchup: The UNM baseball team provided a thrilling performance against the highly-ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders, ranked 17th nationally. The Lobos displayed resilience, battling back from a significant 7-0 deficit to take an 8-7 lead in the seventh inning. This comeback was fueled by a strong offensive showing from the team. Junior outfielder Devon Dixon had a career day at the plate, leading the Lobos with three hits. Sophomore infielder Konner Kinkade emerged as another offensive weapon, driving in a career-high four runs. However, the Red Raiders wouldn’t go down without a fight. They responded with four runs in the sixth inning to steal the victory away from UNM.

Looking Ahead to Mountain West Conference Play: Although the Lobos fell short against Texas Tech, their performance showcased their fighting spirit and offensive capabilities. With a couple of key players stepping up, UNM has positive momentum heading into their crucial opening series of Mountain West Conference play against UNLV this weekend.

Men’s Golf (No. 19 Ranking)

Lobos Secure Top-Five Finish at Lamkin Invitational: The No. 19 ranked UNM men’s golf team displayed their talent and depth by finishing tied for fifth place at the Lamkin Invitational. The Lobos carded a combined score of 15-under par, demonstrating their ability to compete against strong competition.

Boneta Remains a Consistent Force: Senior golfer Albert Boneta continued to be a leader for the Lobos. He secured his second consecutive top-10 finish in a tournament by shooting an impressive 7-under par. This consistent performance bodes well for UNM as they prepare for their next challenge, the Arizona Intercollegiate, in a couple of weeks.
