New Mexico United 2024: Lighting Up the Attack (Part 3)

New Mexico United 2024: Lighting Up the Attack (Part 3)

The attacking line is where the magic happens, and New Mexico United has a talented group of players poised to bring the fireworks in the 2024 USL Championship season. Here’s a look at some of the key attackers:

  • Forwards:
    • Abu Danladi (GHA): A proven goal scorer, Danladi brings experience and a nose for the net. His physicality and finishing ability will be a nightmare for opposing defenders.
    • Mukwelle Akale (COD): A new signing, Akale is a young, exciting forward with raw pace and dribbling skills. His ability to take on defenders and create chances will add a new dimension to NMU’s attack.
    • Cristian Nava (USA): A local product and fan favorite, Nava brings energy and work ethic to the forward line. His ability to press defenders and create turnovers could be a valuable asset. It may be a while before United see Nava back on the pitch as he continues to recover from a torn ACL.
    • Greg Hurst (USA): The creative centerpiece of the attack, Hurst is known for his vision, passing range, and ability to set up his teammates. Look for him to pull the strings and orchestrate NMU’s attacking plays. Hurst has a chance to build upon a strong close to the 2023 season and anchor the front for United.
    • Jacobo Reyes (USA): A versatile player comfortable on the wing or as a forward, Reyes brings pace, skill, and a goalscoring threat. His ability to adapt to different roles will be valuable for NMU’s attacking tactics.

The one thing that every United supporter should know by now is that an Eric Quill-coached side will not stop attacking. Quill has said time and time again that the club wants to play an attractive attacking style of football. The additions that the gaffer has made shows a desire to increase the pace and the technical ability of the team.

Now that the 2024 season is here, the only way to know how this team will perform is to see it on the pitch. Their first test of the campaign is the Eastern Conference Champion Pittsburgh Riverhounds. Coming off a season where they finished first in the East, it would be easy to pick them to repeat their success from prior years. Behind legendary USL coach Bob Lilley, anything could happen. Pittsburgh dealt with a lot of roster turnover in the offseason, bidding farewell to their top goalscorer, starting keeper, and two key defenders.

United will need to find a way to take advantage of those changes and make their mark early against the Riverhounds. Historically, United hasn’t played well from behind and jumping out to a quick lead could be just what they need to overcome Lilley-ball. The Riverhounds like to play defensive under Lilley, especially on the road, and if United gets behind, they’ll face a tough task in breaking down the low block.

Player to Watch

Marco Micaletto – One of the newest faces for United, Micaletto is coming off of a great season in MLS NP and could be a new engine in the midfield for the Black and Yellow. With Nava out and Wehan departing, Micaletto could be the every day midfielder that United needs. He can score, he can create chances, and he has great vision. Keep an eye on Marco throughout the season.

United kicks off their season on Saturday at The Lab in their 2024 home opener. Adam Diehl and Andy Hageman will be on the airwaves with coverage starting at 1 pm followed by kickoff at 2 pm.
