Cup season begins for United against Lubbock

The magic of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup is back for an encore at Rio Rancho High School on Tuesday night. The last time United hosted a match at the home of the Rams, they beat UDA by a final of 6-0. This time out, they get to host the Lubbock Matadors from the NPSL, who are coming off of the best season in their short history.

Without having seen much of the Matadors in their brief history, it’s hard for anyone to predict how they will play. Not only that, but their 2024 season hasn’t even begun yet. In 2023, the Matadors finished their 11-match season top of the Lone Star Conference and were the runners-up in the conference final, earning them a berth into this year’s Open Cup.

Since then, the Amateur side has managed to work their way into being one of the last three amateur clubs remaining in the competition. To get there, they had to come from behind in the first round against Arizona Monsoon to win 2-1. In the second round, they managed to get past Foro SC, 2-0.

Player to Watch

Shuma Sasaki – In two appearances for the Matadors in the Cup, Sasaki has already made his mark on the tournament. The young forward has two assists and one goal already and room for more. The University of Cumberland player started in 14 of 16 games in the 2023 collegiate season and tallied four goals alongside nine assists. His ability to cross the ball could cause issues if the Matadors are able to get forward.

New Mexico United supporters could be in for a treat on Tuesday night. It’s already been announced, but Cristian Nava has been cleared to return to play and could see the pitch for the first time in over a year. It’s been a long road back from the ACL tear. After minor setbacks during the pre-season, Nava’s reappearance could either be a catalyst or just another body in an already congested midfield.

As a club, United has always taken the Cup seriously. While making an effort to get some lesser-used players onto the pitch, the club views it as a stepping stone to more. This year, with only 8 MLS teams in the competition, the chance to bring home the hardware seems more readily available than ever. Coming off of an off week, there may not be much rotation in the squad, but Coach Quill may have some surprises in store.

Cristian Nava – All eyes will be on the New Mexico native if he’s on the pitch. It will be interesting to see how Nava is able to move on the pitch, particularly on a turf field. There’s bound to be some hesitancy, but if he can overcome that, he may be closer to returning full-time.
