The University of New Mexico Lobos showcased a mix of triumphs and trials over a busy weekend of competition across several sports, including volleyball, cross country, soccer, and football. While the Lobos enjoyed victories in volleyball and men’s cross country, they faced setbacks in their home volleyball tournament finale and on the football field against a top-25 opponent. Coaching staff additions in men’s tennis and women’s cross country and track and field also made headlines, highlighting a period of significant activity and development for Lobo Athletics.
Volleyball: Mixed Results at Lobo Invitational
The Lobo volleyball team kicked off their home tournament, the Lobo Invitational, with a spirited four-set victory over Tulane on Friday, August 30. The Lobos lost the first set 25-19 before rallying to win the next three sets, 28-26, 25-23, and 25-13. The Lobo women were also victorious over the University of North Dakota. After losing the first set in this series as well, the Lobos rebounded for the win. UND took the first two sets, 25-22 and 27-25, before the Lobos won the last three 27-25, 28-26, and 15-12.
However, the momentum was short-lived as the Lobos fell in straight sets to UC Irvine in their home tournament finale on Saturday, August 31. The Lobos struggled to maintain the same level of intensity and consistency seen against Tulane, losing 25-21, 25-19, and 25-18.
Cross Country: Men’s Team Wins Lori Fitzgerald Open, Women Finish Fourth
The Lobo men’s cross country team made a powerful statement at the Lori Fitzgerald Open on Saturday, August 31, securing first place with a dominant performance. Led by newcomer Iker Sanchez, who finished third overall, the men’s team placed five runners in the top ten, demonstrating depth and cohesion. Sanchez clocked in at 14:35.47. The victory underscored the team’s potential as a strong contender in upcoming meets.
On the women’s side, the Lobos finished fourth overall in a competitive field. Tina Nisoli (17:22.0) led the women’s team with a second-place individual finish. Despite missing the podium, the women’s team displayed promising individual performances, setting the stage for potential improvement as the season progresses.
Soccer: Clean Sheet Streak Continues Against San Diego
Lobo women’s soccer continued their strong start to the season with a 1-0 victory over San Diego on Sunday, September 1, extending their win streak to three games. The lone goal came in the 6th minute from Presley Devey. The Lobos’ defense once again proved formidable, limiting San Diego to just three shots on goal. Goalkeeper Callie Droitsch was solid between the posts, making a key save to preserve the shutout. The team’s defensive organization and tactical discipline have been central to their early-season success.
Football: Lobos Fall to No. 21 Arizona in High-Scoring Match
The Lobos football team faced a tough challenge on the road against No. 21 Arizona, ultimately falling 61-39 on Sunday, September 1. Despite the loss, the Lobos displayed flashes of offensive prowess, particularly in the passing game, where quarterback Devon Dampier threw for 260 yards and three touchdowns. However, Arizona’s potent offense, led by Heisman candidate Tetalroa McMillan, proved too much to handle, as the Wildcats amassed over 600 yards of total offense. The Lobos’ defense struggled to contain Arizona’s explosive plays, underscoring the need for adjustments as they head into conference play.
Coaching Staff Updates: New Faces in Men’s Tennis and Cross Country
Lobo Athletics also welcomed new additions to their coaching staff this week. Nico Acevedo was named the assistant coach for men’s tennis on Tuesday, September 3. Acevedo, a former standout player at FAU and Wichita State, brings extensive experience both as a player. His familiarity with the program and enthusiasm for developing players are expected to be valuable assets to the men’s tennis team.
Additionally, Jenna Schwartz joined the Lobo cross country and track and field coaching staff as an assistant. Schwartz, who has a background in distance running and coaching at the collegiate level, expressed excitement about contributing to the program’s continued success. Her expertise in developing long-distance runners aligns well with the Lobos’ strengths and aspirations in cross country and track events.
Overall, it was a weekend of highs and lows for Lobo Athletics, marked by impressive individual performances, team victories, and a few setbacks. As the fall season continues, the Lobos will look to build on their successes and address their challenges, aiming for consistent improvement across all sports.
