It was a week that encapsulated everything New Mexico athletics has been building toward—grit in tight moments, explosive offensive performances, and standout individual efforts across multiple programs.
From clutch tennis finishes to a dominant softball sweep and a statement baseball series win on the road, the Lobos once again proved they can win in a variety of ways.
Women’s Tennis: Veroux Delivers in Another 4-3 Classic
If there’s a defining trait of this Lobo women’s tennis team, it’s their ability to find a hero exactly when they need one.
On Thursday, that role belonged to Ana Veroux.
With the match tied 3-3 against Colorado State, Veroux stepped into a winner-take-all moment and delivered, grinding out a three-set battle, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, to secure a 4-3 victory. It marked New Mexico’s third 4-3 win in conference play—a testament to both their resilience and composure under pressure.
The match itself followed a familiar script.
After narrowly dropping the doubles point in a pair of tightly contested matches—including a marathon tiebreak at No. 1 doubles—the Lobos were forced to chase from behind. In singles play, they responded with balance and depth. Yu Yun “Kathy” Tsai and Vianca Corley each secured straight-set wins, while Marika Matsoukatidi continued her reputation as a clutch performer with another three-set victory.
That set the stage for Veroux, who held her nerve late in the third set before sealing the win when her opponent’s final forehand sailed long, igniting a celebration that reflected both relief and confidence.
Setback Against Wyoming
Two days later, the Lobos found themselves in another tight contest—but this time, the result went the other way.
Despite sweeping the doubles point against Wyoming, New Mexico couldn’t carry that momentum into singles play, where the Cowgirls claimed four matches to secure a 4-1 win. Several matches were trending toward third-set finishes, but Wyoming closed out key moments before the Lobos could mount a comeback.
The result dropped UNM to 3-5 in conference play, setting up a pivotal final home match with postseason implications.
Women’s Basketball: Eagan Builds Her Staff
The foundation of a new era continues to take shape for Lobo women’s basketball.
Head coach Amy Eagan added two key pieces to her staff this week, bringing in familiar faces who played central roles in her previous success.
Jordan Mellott was named associate head coach, reuniting with Eagan after helping engineer dramatic turnarounds at Lindenwood and Drury. Known for his offensive expertise, Mellott was instrumental in developing high-efficiency systems that ranked among the nation’s best in shooting and ball movement.
Lindsay Ward also joins the staff, bringing a strong background in guard development and defensive playmaking. During her time at Lindenwood, she helped produce one of the top turnover-margin teams in the conference while mentoring record-setting players.
Together, the additions signal continuity and alignment as Eagan begins to implement her system in Albuquerque.
Track & Field: Samuel, Kosgei Lead Historic Performances
New Mexico’s distance program continues to operate at an elite, national level.
At the Stanford Invitational, Pamela Kosgei delivered one of the fastest 10,000-meter performances in collegiate history, while Habtom Samuel posted the top 10K time in the nation this season. Their performances headlined a weekend that saw 10 personal bests across the roster, with multiple marks landing among the top times in program history.
Samuel’s dominance didn’t go unnoticed.
Following his performance, he was named USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week for the fourth time in his career. His winning time not only set a meet record but also placed him among the fastest collegiate performers ever, reinforcing his position as one of the premier distance runners in the country.
The momentum carried into the weekend’s second day, where Matthew Endrödy highlighted the middle-distance group with a breakthrough 800-meter performance, running 1:47.93—the sixth-fastest outdoor time in program history and a mark likely to qualify for NCAA regionals.
Softball: Lobos Sweep Boise State in Historic Fashion
Few weekends have been as emphatic as what New Mexico softball accomplished in Boise.
The Lobos didn’t just win the series—they dominated it.
New Mexico swept Boise State on the road for the first time in program history, outscoring the Broncos 21-5 across three games and never trailing at any point in the series.
Game One: Benningfield Sets the Tone
Caitlin Benningfield delivered one of her best performances of the season, throwing a complete game with 10 strikeouts in a 6-1 win. She controlled the game from the start, striking out the leadoff batter in six different innings and consistently shutting down any momentum Boise State attempted to build.
At the plate, Allie Williams powered the offense with four RBI, including a late two-run home run that put the game out of reach.
Game Two: Extra-Inning Explosion
Friday’s game provided the most dramatic moment of the series.
Locked in a 2-2 tie heading into extra innings, the Lobos erupted for seven runs in the eighth inning—turning a tense battle into a runaway victory. The defining swing came from Miracle McKenzie, who launched a grand slam as part of a five-RBI performance.
It was a relentless offensive display, fueled by patience and timely hitting, as New Mexico capitalized on walks and defensive miscues to break the game open.
Game Three: Closing the Sweep
The Lobos completed the sweep with a 6-2 win, once again relying on timely hitting and strong pitching.
Jessica DeLeon delivered the biggest hit of the day—a three-RBI double in the seventh inning—to extend the lead, while McKenna Guest dominated in relief, allowing just one hit over 4.2 scoreless innings.
The sweep marked a series of program milestones, including the first sweep of Boise State since 2015 and the first ever in Boise. It also extended New Mexico’s winning streak to five of its last six games and secured back-to-back conference series wins.
Weekly Honors Follow
The dominance didn’t go unrecognized.
McKenna Guest was named Mountain West Pitcher of the Week, while Caitlin Benningfield earned Freshman of the Week honors. Together, they anchored a pitching staff that posted a 1.27 ERA during the series and held Boise State to a .195 batting average.
Men’s Tennis: Rivalry Win Sparks Momentum
In one of the most intense matchups of the week, New Mexico men’s tennis delivered a 4-2 victory over rival New Mexico State.
As has often been the case, Dario Ciobotaru provided the defining moment.
Locked in a second-set tiebreak at No. 1 singles, Ciobotaru held off multiple set points before closing out a 9-7 win to clinch the match. His victory extended UNM’s remarkable streak at the top singles spot, where the Lobos have now won 30 consecutive home matches.
The win snapped a three-match losing streak and showcased the team’s resilience, particularly after early adversity in singles play.
Baseball: Lobos Take Series at UNLV
On the diamond, New Mexico baseball continued its strong conference play with a road series win over UNLV.
Game One: Comeback Falls Short
The series opened with a 15-10 loss, despite a powerful offensive showing that included home runs from Brodey Williams and Luke Mansy. The Lobos rallied with a six-run inning to get back into the game, but couldn’t overcome an early surge from the Rebels.
Game Two: Pitching Locks It Down
Friday night told a different story.
After jumping out to an early lead, the Lobos leaned on a dominant bullpen performance to secure a 7-6 win. Cooper Corkrean delivered 4.2 shutout innings in relief, stabilizing the game after a shaky start, while Luke Wiseman closed the door with a clutch double play in the ninth.
Game Three: Complete Control
The finale was all New Mexico.
Behind a composed start from Ryan Castillo and a balanced offensive attack, the Lobos cruised to a 12-2 victory to clinch the series. The lineup produced up and down the order, with multiple players driving in runs and capitalizing on scoring opportunities.
The win marked New Mexico’s second consecutive conference series victory and continued a trend of success against UNLV, with the Lobos winning five straight series against the Rebels.
A Program Finding Its Identity
Across sports, the pattern is becoming undeniable.
New Mexico is winning close matches, dominating when opportunities arise, and producing standout individual performances at the right moments. Whether it’s a clutch tiebreak in tennis, a late-inning surge in softball, or a balanced effort on the baseball diamond, the Lobos are showing they can compete—and succeed—in any situation.
