Tony Romo held a somber seven-minute press conference with reporters on Tuesday to share his views on the quarterback situation in Dallas.
Romo, the veteran incumbent and holder of every single Cowboy passing record, conceded in a written statement that the team should move on with Dak Prescott at quarterback due to the fact that the team is winning under the rookie QB.
The emotional statement was clearly difficult for Romo, as expressed with emotions of watching from the sideline as the team progressed without him.
“Seasons are fleeting. Games become more precious. Chances for success diminish,” Romo said. “Your potential successor has arrived. Injured two years in a row now in your mid-30s. The press is whispering. Everyone has doubts. You spent your career working to get here. Now, we have to start all over.” said a choked up Romo.
Romo’s time with the Cowboys is likely coming to a close, as the team will most certainly release him or try to trade him to another team. The Broncos are a team that might be a good fit for Romo, however, his sizable salary would be difficult from most teams to handle.
There was criticism and praise regarding Romo’s choice to read a written statement and to not take questions, while others like Stephen A. Smith said the press conference was “unnecessary.”
Now it is clearly Dak Prescott’s team and the pressure of looking over his shoulder will no longer affect the young player, however, you could argue that he showed little to no issue with having Romo observing from the sideline.
