The University of New Mexico football team added another Power Four opponent to its future schedule this week, announcing a Sept. 18, 2027 road matchup against the Texas Tech Red Raiders in Lubbock, Texas.
The meeting will mark the 46th all-time matchup between the programs in a rivalry dating back to 1931. The Red Raiders have won four straight in the series, including a 49-14 victory in the teams’ most recent meeting in 2012. New Mexico’s last win over Texas Tech came in 2004, when the Lobos knocked off a Mike Leach-led squad 27-24.
The game replaces a previously scheduled road contest at Texas A&M after the Aggies canceled the matchup. UNM’s 2027 nonconference slate currently includes home games against Northern Colorado and New Mexico State, along with road trips to Oregon State and Texas Tech.

Tournament Run Ends One Game Short of Championship
New Mexico’s impressive Mountain West Tournament run came to an end Friday night after splitting a pair of games against UNLV and Grand Canyon.

Later Friday, the Lobos battled Grand Canyon once again with a championship berth on the line but fell 11-7. After GCU scored seven runs in the opening inning, New Mexico spent the rest of the game fighting back.
Jessica DeLeon homered for the third time in the tournament and Melanie Macias drove in three runs, but the Lopes held on to advance.
The Lobos closed the season with 28 wins, their highest total since 2015, and recorded their best Mountain West Tournament finish since 2001.

For the men, Habtom Samuel continues to dominate collegiate distance running. Samuel holds the nation’s top times in both the 5,000m and 10,000m and recently earned USTFCCCA Co-National Athlete of the Week honors after breaking his own NCAA outdoor 5K record with a 13:03.47 performance.
Both Samuel and Kosgei were also named to the latest Bowerman Watch List, giving New Mexico representation on both the men’s and women’s lists for the first time this outdoor season.
