The Lobos mounted a furious eight-run comeback in the final two innings against the visiting Nevada Wolf Pack at Santa Ana Field on Sunday, but it was not enough to overcome a 13-run deficit in the rubber match of three-game weekend series.
Wolf Pack starting pitcher Jake Jackson was nearly un-hittable for Nevada, with six innings of shutout baseball to earn his second win of the season. Jackson stymied the Lobos with eight strikeouts and four hits, with two walks and zero runs allowed.
Freshman third baseman Joshua Zamora belted two home runs, while infielders Tyler Bosetti and Conor Allard each drove in three runs to lead the Wolf Pack.
Hayden Schilling led the Lobos with four hits in five at-bats, including a pair of doubles as the Lobos attempted to mount a late comeback. Catcher Dan Zakosek provided the only home run for the Lobos on a blustery afternoon with the wind blowing out to right centerfield.
Cody Dye earned the loss for New Mexico after lasting just three and a third innings. The sophomore from Walnut, California allowed six earned runs off of four hits, with two walks and three strikeouts. Nathan Garley, James Harrington, and Nick Krauth combined to allow seven runs in relief of Dye, before UNM manager Ray Birmingham found the right mix of relief pitchers as Chad Smith and Brian Coffey kept the Wolf Pack scoreless over the final three innings.
With the loss, the Lobos fall to 5-5-1 on the young season and 1-2 in Mountain West Conference play. UNM heads to Lubbock, Texas to take on Texas Tech University in a one-game series on Wednesday before continuing their conference slate against Fresno State next Friday in Fresno.
