Carter Bins and Jeremiah Burks each drove in three runs as the Fresno State Bulldogs won 11-6 in a lopsided game against the University of New Mexico Lobos on Sunday afternoon at Santa Ana Star Field.
The Bulldogs swept the three-game weekend series while handing Ray Birmingham and the Lobos their 5th-straight loss.
Bins put Fresno State on the board early with a three-run bomb down the right field line off of UNM starter Robert Gasser. The Lobos would counter with a run of their own in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI groundout by catcher Robby Campillo.
But the Bulldogs would strike back with their second of three, three-run innings on the day, as Burks hit a two-run home run over the right-center fence off of Gasser. Gasser would end the day with two innings pitched, with six earned runs on three hits, while striking out two batters and allowing three walks.
Davis Moore pitched five and two-thirds innings to earn the win for the Bulldogs, while Jamie Arias would close out the final two innings of the game two receive his first save of the season. Fresno scored 11 runs on 12 hits and zero errors, while the Lobos managed just six runs on 11 knocks.
Three Lobos notched two hits on the day, with Connor Mang and Chris Dunn each ending the day with two hits in five at-bats. New Mexico posted double-digit hits on the day, but they failed to make clutch hits with runners in scoring position.
With two runners on and zero outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, Fresno State manager Mike Batesole put in Arias to get his team out of a jam. Arias proceeded to strike out two of the next three Lobo batters, as Brayden Merritt and Hayden Schilling each struck out.
The three-game series sweep by Fresno State dropped the Loos to 6-9 in MW conference play and 12-17-1 overall. The Bulldogs jumped to 20-11 overall and 7-8 in conference play, tied for fourth place with Air Force. The Nevada Wolf Pack lead the conference with an 11-3 mark after taking two of three games form San Jose State over the weekend.
