The University of New Mexico Lobos have yet to earn a win on the road as their record now falls to 0-3, and 2-3 on the season. After playing in Lynchburg, Virginia, against Liberty and San Jose, California, against San Jose State University – the Lobos return to DreamStyle Stadium to face Colorado State (1-5).
Tevaka Tuioti continues to struggle as he threw 4-for-10 for 34 yards and one interception against SJSU – and was subbed off mid-way in the second quarter for Sheriron Jones. While finding themselves down 26-7 at the half, Jones nearly completed the comeback as he went 7-for-16 for 127 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions.
UNM outscored SJSU 14-6 in the second half, though that was not enough as they eventually lost 32-21.
With the Lobos now reaching the halfway mark of the season, the urgency of earning six wins and bowl eligibility – still yet to face No. 14 Boise State – has become a reality. The outcome against Colorado State could either bring Head Coach Bob Davie and his players at ease or present new challenges to overcome during the second half of the season.
The Lobos’ defense, comprised of mostly young talent, has improved significantly in the previous two games – as their points allowed per game has decreased from 49.7 to 24.5.
Colorado State has seen better days with the 2019 season not landing in their favor. The Rams have only won one of six, a lop-sided 38-13 victory over Western Illinois (0-5), and are 0-2 in conference play.
The Rams will play Friday night without its starting quarterback Colin Hill, who, after three games, is out for the year with a torn ACL. Colorado State has averaged 456.7 yards on offense on the season, including ten lost fumbles.
A notable player to keep watch is the Rams’ Marvin Kinsey, Jr., who has amassed 618 yards in six games.
