The University of New Mexico Lobos (2-4) season is now in turmoil as they have lost three in a row by an average margin of 10.6 points.
In order to be bowl eligible, UNM must win four of the six remaining games.
After losing 35-21 to a struggling Colorado State (2-5) in Dream Style Stadium, the Lobos are back on the road to face Wyoming Cowboys (4-2) on Jonah Field at War Memorial Stadium in Laramie, Wyoming.
Sheriron Jones was given the starting quarterback position and played the entire game, while Tevaka Tuioti remained sidelined. Jones threw 8-for-17 for 89 yards, one interception, and was sacked twice. Despite UNM’s defense sacking Rams’ quarterback Patrick O’Brien on four occasions, O’Brien had some impressive numbers as he threw 25-for-34 for 420 yards and three touchdowns.
In the previous two meetings, UNM has lost by a margin of three points against the Cowboys. Meanwhile, as Head Coach Bob Davie’s defense continues to improve, the offense has struggled to outscore its opponents. It will be interesting to see how Davie and his staff strategize to stop one of the league’s best defensive teams in being Wyoming.
While the Lobos are ranked 24 nationally in rushing yards per game – averaging 219.5 yards per game – Davie explains his game plan during the weekly press conference.
“It has to be run to win, throw to score.”
In other news, Ahmari Davis is set to make his return this week as he, Bryson Carroll and Jones rank among the teams’ best pass/rushing offensive players – as their skills and contribution will be heavily relied on against Wyoming Saturday.
Another factor both teams must take into consideration is a 52-degree temperature at kickoff, with winds blowing from 20-30 miles per hour and gusts of 35 to 40 miles per hour.
