Lobos Surge Across Spring Sports with Records, Honors, and Statement Wins
It was a packed and successful week for the New Mexico Lobos, highlighted by historic track performances, a dominant baseball sweep, and a championship effort from men’s golf.
Track & Field: Record Times and National Recognition
New Mexico Track & Field delivered one of its strongest early-season showings at the 44 Farms Invitational, producing five Top-10 marks in program outdoor history.
The women’s 4x100m relay team of Sofia Pineda, Taniya Looney, Adryana Shelby, and Laylah Lawson posted a 45.20 finish—second-fastest in program history—while Looney added a standout individual performance in the 100m.
That effort earned Taniya Looney Mountain West Women’s Track Athlete of the Week honors. Her 11.05 time ranks among the fastest in the nation this season and leads the conference, further solidifying her as one of the top sprinters in the region.
Additional highlights included:
- Ajia Hughes moving to No. 3 all-time at UNM in the high jump (1.78m)
- Mikyla Harkley climbing to No. 7 in the triple jump with a personal-best 12.62m
- Arian Milicija finishing second in the men’s pole vault (5.12m)
The Lobos now head to a competitive California swing, including the Mt. SAC Relays and other high-profile meets.
Baseball: Lobos Sweep SDSU, Take Control of MW Race
The Lobos baseball team delivered a defining weekend, sweeping San Diego State Aztecs to move into first place in the Mountain West standings.
The series opened dramatically when Anthony Diaz launched a walk-off two-run homer in a 5-3 victory. The momentum carried into Saturday, where Ryan Castillo threw a complete-game gem—the program’s first nine-inning complete game since 2018—in an 11-3 win.
New Mexico completed the sweep Sunday with a 12-8 victory behind a 15-hit performance, extending its winning streak over SDSU to nine games.
A major contributor to the sweep, Lenny Junior Ashby earned Mountain West Player of the Week honors after hitting .667 with extra-base power across all three games.
Softball: Split Results Highlight Offensive Firepower
The Lobos softball team experienced mixed results but showed resilience and offensive explosiveness.
After dropping a midweek doubleheader to UNLV Rebels, New Mexico rebounded against Nevada Wolf Pack with a thrilling extra-innings victory in Game 1. The Lobos erased a late deficit before erupting for six runs in the eighth inning to secure a 12-8 win.
Standout performances included:
- Allie Williams delivering a clutch three-run homer
- Miracle McKenzie recording multiple hits and RBIs
- Melanie Macias driving in three runs in the comeback effort
However, Nevada responded in Game 2 to take the split, highlighting ongoing inconsistency despite strong offensive output.
Tennis: Tough Week Despite Bright Spots
Both men’s and women’s tennis squads faced challenges in conference play.
The women’s team dropped matches to Utah State Aggies and Boise State Broncos, with Yu Yun “Kahy” Tsai providing the lone singles victory in the Utah State match.
On the men’s side, the Lobos secured a notable 4-0 road win over Nevada, showcasing depth and resilience in singles play. However, they followed that with a 4-0 loss to UNLV, snapping their brief momentum.
Men’s Golf: Lobos Capture Thunderbird Collegiate Title
The No. 20 Lobos men’s golf team delivered one of the week’s most impressive performances, winning the ASU Thunderbird Collegiate in dominant fashion.
New Mexico finished at 32-under, defeating a stacked field that included host Arizona State Sun Devils.
Leading the way was Johnnie Clark, who captured his first collegiate title with a 14-under performance. His victory marked the fourth individual win by a Lobo this season, signaling strong momentum heading into the postseason.
Women’s Golf: Regular Season Wraps Up
The Lobos women’s golf team closed its regular season at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic, finishing tied for 12th.
Ava Cepeda led the team with a final-round 70, continuing her consistent play heading into the Mountain West Championship.
Women’s Basketball: Norwood Joins Rebuild
New head coach Amy Eagan added her first signee, bringing in guard Valerie Norwood from Lindenwood.
Norwood, a former Miss Kansas Basketball, adds versatility and defensive strength as the program begins its roster rebuild.
