New Mexico United hadn’t beaten Sacramento Republic FC since September 18, 2023. They hadn’t even had a draw against them in that time. Since then, United had lost all three of the meetings between the two sides. This year, United had only won once on the road and historically had not played well at Heart Health Park. A nervy first half, filled with big saves by Kris Shakes finally gave way to United capitalizing on a second half mistake to take three points on the road, 0-1.
Sacramento controlled much of the attacking play during the opening 45 minutes, outshooting United and forcing several key saves from Shakes, but the visitors consistently denied quality scoring opportunities to keep the match level.
The hosts nearly struck in the fourth minute when Memo Rodríguez unleashed a low shot from outside the penalty area, but Shakes was equal to the effort, diving to his left to make the save. Seconds later, Danny Crisostomo fired from inside the box, only for the United back line to step in with a crucial block before Sacramento earned the first of several corner kicks.
United’s defense continued to answer every challenge.
After Mark-Anthony Kaye had another effort blocked in the 14th minute, Sacramento threatened again moments later off a corner. Jack Gurr found space inside the box but blasted his attempt over the crossbar.
The biggest stretch of pressure came midway through the half. In the 16th minute, Forster Ajago broke free in the middle of the penalty area, but Shakes stayed composed to make another point-blank stop. The goalkeeper was briefly treated for an injury following the save before continuing.
Just three minutes later, Sacramento created another dangerous chance when Gurr’s cross found space in front of goal, but Shakes was once again in perfect position to deny the effort.
United’s defenders repeatedly got bodies in front of shots throughout the half. Ryan Spaulding and Memo Rodríguez each saw attempts blocked during a busy sequence in the 42nd minute, while Sacramento also missed the target on several long-range opportunities from Kaye, Spaulding and Rodríguez.
The visitors created a handful of chances of their own. Zico Bailey narrowly missed with a shot from outside the box following an early corner, while Greg Hurst had an attempt blocked in the 22nd minute after New Mexico earned consecutive attacking opportunities.
Sacramento finished the half with another spell of pressure, earning a corner in second-half stoppage time, but United’s defense once again held its shape to preserve the clean sheet.
Despite spending much of the opening 45 minutes absorbing pressure, New Mexico’s back line and Shakes combined for a resilient defensive performance, frustrating Sacramento’s attack and sending the match into halftime scoreless.
New Mexico emerged from halftime with renewed attacking intent while maintaining the defensive resolve that had carried it through the opening 45 minutes.
United’s first promising opportunity of the half came in the 64th minute when Ousman Jabang found Dayonn Harris on the right side of the penalty area, but Sacramento goalkeeper Danny Vitiello reacted with a strong save to keep the match scoreless.
Just two minutes later, United nearly broke through again. Christopher Gloster’s effort from inside the box was blocked before Greg Hurst pounced on the loose ball, forcing Vitiello into another outstanding save. Hurst nearly converted the ensuing corner, but his header drifted just wide of the right post.
Sacramento answered with a dangerous sequence of its own in the 69th minute. Blake Willey’s shot was blocked by the New Mexico defense before Danny Crisostomo’s follow-up attempt was comfortably handled by Kristopher Shakes, who continued his stellar evening between the posts.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 73rd minute.
After absorbing another Sacramento attack, United quickly transitioned into a counterattack. Jabang carried the ball forward before chipping a pass to Harris, who unleashed a right-footed strike from long range. To try and answer, Danny Vitiello came well off of his line, making a critical error. The keeper left the area behind him wide open, and Harris’ shot chipped over him and into the bottom-left corner beyond Vitiello’s reach, giving New Mexico a 1-0 advantage with just under 20 minutes remaining.
The goal capped an outstanding performance from Harris, who had been one of United’s most dangerous attacking threats throughout the second half.
Sacramento immediately pushed numbers forward in search of an equalizer, making three substitutions before launching wave after wave of attacks. Kyle Edwards fired just wide in the 78th minute before Jack Gurr’s header was blocked inside the six-yard box moments later, after another dangerous cross.
United’s defense continued to frustrate the hosts. Memo Rodríguez saw a shot blocked in the 84th minute, and Gurr missed another golden opportunity a minute later, sending his effort high over the crossbar from the middle of the penalty area.
Manager Dennis Sanchez turned to his bench to preserve the lead, bringing on Tyler Blackett after Cristian Nava was forced off with an injury before adding Will Seymore, Luther Archimède and Cullen Wilkerson to reinforce both the midfield and back line.
Sacramento continued to press deep into stoppage time, but New Mexico’s back four refused to break. Even after a series of late free kicks around the penalty area, the visitors remained organized, limiting clear chances while Shakes calmly handled everything that reached his goal.
Wilkerson nearly added an insurance goal in the 94th minute after a feed from Justin Rennicks, but Vitiello made one final save to keep Sacramento within striking distance.
It ultimately didn’t matter.
After weathering more than 90 minutes of sustained pressure, New Mexico completed one of its strongest defensive performances of the season. Shakes produced several critical saves, the back line consistently stepped in with timely blocks, and Harris’ spectacular counterattacking strike proved to be the difference as United secured a hard-fought 1-0 road victory over Sacramento Republic FC.
Player of the Match
Kris Shakes – Shakes continues to show why this front office has put their faith in him. He was tested time and again throughout the match, especially in the first half. If not for his efforts, United surely would have fallen behind early and possibly by multiple goals. But the young keeper stood tall and kept a dangerous Republic side off the scoresheet.
