New Mexico United left it late, but two goals in the final five minutes secured a 2-0 victory over El Paso Locomotive on Saturday night in a match that was defined by disciplined defending and timely finishing.
For 85 minutes, neither side could find a breakthrough despite each creating quality opportunities. United’s back line and goalkeeper Kristopher Shakes repeatedly answered the challenge before substitutes helped turn a tense scoreless draw into a convincing road victory.
The opening half featured chances at both ends but no goals. El Paso threatened early, with Diego Abitia forcing Shakes into a save in the ninth minute before Carl Sainté narrowly missed the top corner from distance.
United gradually settled into the match and generated pressure through set pieces. Luther Archimède was active throughout the first half, seeing multiple efforts denied. His best opportunity came in the 37th minute when Blake Gillingham made a point-blank save after Dayonn Harris found him in the middle of the box. Zico Bailey also tested Gillingham from outside the area two minutes later.
El Paso nearly stole the lead before halftime, but Shakes came up with another key stop on Diego Abitia in stoppage time before Arturo Ortíz headed just wide from the ensuing corner.
The scoreless first half gave way to an entertaining second period, with both goalkeepers continuing to shine.
Shakes was called into action early after the restart, denying Abitia in the 51st minute before watching Rubio Rubín send another chance just wide moments later. Rubín forced another save from the United keeper in the 60th minute as El Paso searched for the opener.
United manager Dennis Sanchez turned to his bench on the hour mark, making four substitutions that eventually shifted the match. Jake LaCava, Joseph Melto Quiah, Valentin Noël, and Tyler Blackett all entered, adding fresh legs for the final half hour.
El Paso continued to press. Amando Moreno, who entered midway through the second half, fired a pair of long-range efforts just over the crossbar in the 66th and 67th minutes, while Gabi Torres forced another save from Shakes in the 80th minute.
Just when it appeared the match was headed toward a draw, United found its breakthrough.
In the 85th minute, Kipp Keller lofted a ball over the top that fell perfectly to Melto. Chesting the ball down, Melto slipped the ball past the El Paso keeper and calmly finished with his right foot into the bottom-left corner to give New Mexico a 1-0 advantage.
The insurance goal arrived four minutes later.
LaCava drove forward down the right flank and delivered a cross into the middle where Bailey arrived to finish with his left foot, doubling the lead in the 89th minute and putting the result beyond doubt.
El Paso mounted one final push in stoppage time, firing three consecutive shots in the 93rd minute, but each effort was blocked by a determined United defense before Moreno sent another attempt over the bar moments later.
Shakes finished with several crucial saves to preserve the clean sheet, while United’s defense consistently absorbed pressure throughout the evening before the visitors capitalized on their late chances.
The victory showcased New Mexico United’s patience and resilience, as a disciplined defensive performance laid the foundation for two clinical late goals that secured all three points in hostile territory.
