Lobos fall to Patriots on extra inning walk-off home run

The Lobos rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the ninth inning on Sunday in the rubber match of a three-game series against No. 23 Dallas Baptist, only to fall in dramatic fashion on a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 11th inning by third baseman Tim Millard.

New Mexico infielder Hayden Shilling capped off the furious late rally in the top of the ninth for the Lobos with a pinch-hit single to left to score Luis Gonzalez. Reliever Christian Tripp shut the door on the Patriots in the ninth to send the game to extra innings.

Shilling would come through again for the Lobos with a clutch RBI single in the top of the eleventh inning to give UNM a 5-4 advantage. Danny Collier added an insurance run on a ground out to shortstop to give the Lobos a two-run lead with three outs to go.

The Patriots would make the most of their remaining three outs, capped by the game-wining three-run bomb by Millard.

The Dallas Baptist fans that stayed for the conclusion of the game were treated to a wild finish, the type of game the that makes baseball such a compelling sport.

With two losses in three games against Dallas Baptist, the Lobos fall to 4-2 on the regular season with another tough road game against Texas Tech on deck this Tuesday.

The Red Raiders are an impressive 8-1 on the season with impressive wins over Mississippi State and a four-game sweep of the University of California on their early season schedule.

UNM begins Mountain West Conference play on March 3rd with a three-game series in Colorado Springs against the Air Force Academy.
