UNM’s losing streak reached five games on Sunday with a 1-0 loss to No.7 Cal State Fullerton. It was the third straight one-run loss for the Lobos in what turned out to be an impressive showing against one of the best teams in the country.
Luis Gonzalez pitched seven strong innings of seven-hit ball, with the only blemish to his line occurring in the third inning on a RBI single by shortstop Timmy Richards. It would prove to be the only run scored in a well-pitched game between two evenly matched teams.
In addition to a stellar pitching performance, Gonzalez, a pre-season golden spikes watch candidate, notched both of UNM’s hits on the day as Titan starter John Gavin shut down the Lobos.
Although the Lobos lost all five games of their road trip against two nationally ranked teams, Ray Birmingham’s team were in contention in all but one game.
“First, I hate losing three, but it was a very promising weekend,” Birmingham said via GoLobos.com. “What I saw was encouraging for the rest of the season.”
The Lobos will look to get back on track in a two-game series against Grand Canyon University on Tuesday at Santa Ana Star Field before heading back on the road for a three-game MWC series against UNLV on Friday.
