Lobos fall to Red Raiders 12-4

The University of New Mexico baseball team held their own against No. 6 Texas Tech through the first four innings, but the potent Red Raider offense proved to be too much as the Lobos fell 12-4 in Lubbock on Tuesday afternoon.

First baseman Jack Zoellner gave the Lobs a 4-3 lead in the top of the fourth inning with a RBI double to left field, but the Red Raiders would respond with a RBI single by right fielder Conner Beck to tie the game at four.

Texas Tech would go on to score eight unanswered runs over the next four innings, highlighted by a two-run home run by second baseman Michael Davis in the fifth inning.

UNM starting pitcher Cason Schneider allowed two earned runs on three hits over three innings of work, with reliever Austin Isenhart getting tagged with the loss after giving up four earned runs in one and a third innings in relief.

“We hit the ball today; now we just need to do it a bit better with guys in scoring position,” UNM coach Ray Birmingham said via GoLobos.com “We had our chances, but a few mistakes here and there cost us.”

The Lobos will look to bounce back with a three-game series against Missouri State at Santa Ana Star field starting on Thursday at 6:30.
