Three Neal recruits granted release

Paul Weir is out on the recruiting trail looking for players to round out his roster for the 2017-18 basketball season.

He will need to add three more targets to his list, with the official announcement from the school that all three incoming recruits signed by Craig Neal to a letter of intent last November have been granted their release.

The announcement is not surprising, as all three players were courted by a different coaching staff, but it is another sign that Weir has an uphill battle to put together a viable roster in his first year as UNM men’s basketball coach.

Mike Parks, Chris Yannick Sodom, and Isaiah Poor Bear Chandler have been released from their letter of intent and are free to look for opportunities with other programs.

“We wish all three of these young men the best in their future endeavors,” said Weir in a news release from the school. “These situations are all about a perfect fit, and I think we all agreed that this was no longer the case here. They remain exceptionally talented young men with incredibly bright futures ahead of them.”

On a related note, Weir has not yet confirmed his coaching staff for the upcoming season. According to Geoff Grammer of the Albuquerque Journal, the decision on who will make up his three-man coaching staff is “close.”
