UNM Basketball: Sam Logwood taking leave of absence from basketball team

The rocky first year for head coach Paul Weir just got a lot bumpier with the announcement that UNM leading scorer and rebounder Sam Logwood is taking a leave of absence from the team.

According to Geoff Grammer of the Albuquerque Journal, Logwood has been unhappy for quite some time and is taking a personal leave away from the team to contemplate whether or not he will continue playing for UNM.

There is no timetable for return as it is unclear at this time if Logwood, a senior who is going to graduate at the end of this semester, has played his last game for the Lobos.

Logwood has been a vital player for Weir in his first season at UNM, leading the team in scoring and rebounds while providing veteran leadership for the younger players on the roster.

But Logwood has clearly not been happy for some time, dating back to when he announced he was planning on transferring away from the team last March, only to change his mind and continue at UNM for his senior season.

The 22-year-old native of Indianapolis played his worst game of the season in UNM’s 75-57 lopsided loss to Colorado on Wednesday, scoring just two points on 1 of 7 shooting from the floor, while committing three personal fouls early in the game.

The Lobos will need to quickly rebound from this shocking development with the Aggies coming to DreamStyle Arena on Saturday night. NMSU defeated UNM 75-56 when the two teams faced off in Las Cruces on November 17th.
