Cody Dye pitched eight innings of brilliant one-run baseball as the University of New Mexico Lobos beat the Columbia Lions 3-1 in Houston on Saturday afternoon.
Dye, a 6-0, 197-pound sophomore from Walnut, California, posted his best game of the year with eight strikeouts and two walks while allowing just one earned run. Closer Christian Tripp pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his fifth save of the season, as the Lobos moved to 8-11-1 on the year.
Both teams struggled offensively in what developed into a pitchers duel between Dye and Columbia Starter Ben Wereski, with the Lobos taking a one-run lead in the fourth inning when Connor Mang stole home as part of a double steal with broth Jared Mang taking second.
Robby Campillo plated the second run with an RBI file out of left field, scoring centerfield Phillip Sikes who started the inning by doubling for his sole hit of the game. The Lions would get on the board with an RBI single right fielder Julian Bury in the eighth inning, but that would be closest Columbia would get as Tripp closed out the game for UNM’s second win over Columbia over the weekend.
