Corey Seager to Undergo Season-Ending Tommy John Surgery

Former 2016 NL Rookie of the Year and two-time All-Star shortstop Corey Seager entered the 2018 season with an ailing right elbow that the Dodgers feared would eventually require Tommy John surgery to repair.

That eventuality came to fruition on Monday with the announcement by manager Dave Roberts that Seager will have surgery to repair a strained ulnar collateral ligament in his throwing arm and miss the remainder of the 2018 season.

The news comes at a terrible time for a team that, despite finishing just one game away from winning the World Series in 2017, is currently four games under .500 and eight games out of first place in the National League West.

“It’s a big blow,” Roberts told reporters on Monday. “We just feel for Corey. It’s something that he’s had to deal with for a couple of years. The elbow finally gave way, and I feel bad for him.”

Roberts said that centerfielder Chris Taylor would move from the outfield and take Seager’s spot in the starting lineup at shortstop, and the team promoted Breyvic Valera from Triple-A Oklahoma City to fill Seager’s roster spot.
