Offensive Coordinator Calvin Magee leaving UNM for Ole Miss

The Calvin Magee era of Lobo football lasted just one year, as the former offensive coordinator under Rich Rodriguez at Arizona is joining his former colleague as part of the Ole Miss coaching staff.

According to a report in the Albuquerque Journal, head coach Bob Davie recently learned of Magee’s intentions on leaving the program, and will first look to fill the open offensive coordinator position internally.

Under Magee, the Lobos drastically changed their offense from a triple option run by former OC Bob DeBesse to a spread option. According to the report in the Journal, Davie intends on building upon the improvements made under Magee with the spread offense.

Although the team finished with a 3-9 record for the second consecutive season, the offense did make strides under Magee and will continue to evolve with the next offensive coordinator.

“I hate to lose Calvin,” Davie said in a quote on the Journal website. “But this is a great opportunity for him and his family. I appreciate what he has done for us during the transition. But I understand that it is a good opportunity.”
