Rio Grande Valley FC v New Mexico United Match Preview

Looking to close out their three-match road trip on a high note, New Mexico United head to Edinburg, Texas to take on the Rio Grande Valley FC Toros at H-E-B Park on Saturday, April 6.

New Mexico United (2-0-3) are coming into the weekend riding an undefeated streak through their first five matches. In a stretch that has seen the club’s first two wins in its young history, United have dealt with injuries, as well as one of the toughest schedules in the conference, and found themselves sitting second in the Western Conference table. Under Coach Troy Lesesne, the club has formed an attack that has scored ten goals so far, trailing only the Tulsa Roughnecks.

In their last match, United fell behind for the first time this season after conceding an early goal to Tacoma. The club was able to maintain its form for the remainder of the match, allowing goals from Kevaughn Frater and Ryan Williams to seal the road victory and the three points.

On Saturday, United will look to capitalize again on a defense that has struggled in the early part of the season. There has been no shortage of chances created by New Mexico, who have put an astounding 45.6% of their shots on target so far. If United can continue this trend, this weekend should be another positive outcome for the club.

The Rio Grande Valley Toros (0-3-1) haven’t found success in their matches early in the season. Having been on the road for three of the first four weeks of the season, they are returning to H-E-B Park for only the second time this year. Their previous match at home saw the Toros lose to Fresno FC 2-0.

The Toros, who are the USL affiliate of the MLS club Houston Dynamo, have no shortage of talent on their roster. With multiple players having MLS experience or international caps, they are not to be overlooked. RGV have three players each with a goal and are capable of putting the ball into the net given a chance. United, anchored by captain Josh Suggs, will need to maintain their defensive form against a dangerous club.
