The week started on a terrible note with quarterback Sheriron Jones’ indefinite suspension for allegedly exposing himself in a UNM parking lot. Things did not get any better for Bob Davie and the Lobos at the end of the week, with an uninspired 21-10 loss on the road against the Nevada Wolf Pack.
The Lobos actually played well. They out-gained Nevada on the ground, held the Wolf Pack to 1.9 yards per rush and converted nearly the same number of third downs as their opponent. But dropped passes and an inability to make key stops on fourth down proved to be the downfall for UNM.
UNM jumped on the board first with a nine-play, 90-yard drive capped by a four-yard Ahmari Davis touchdown run.
The two teams exchanged punts on their next possessions, but the Wolf Pack would mount two touchdown scoring drives to close out the second quarter while the Lobos settled for a punt and a missed 53-yard field goal by Andrew Shelley.
Shelley would end up making his next attempt on the opening drive of the second half for the Lobos after an eight-play drive that stalled on a 17-yard loss on a sack by Dom Peterson of Nevada.
The Wolf Pack scored their third touchdown with just under six minutes left in the game when Carson Strong hit Elijah Cooks on a 20-yard TD strike. Cooks would finish with six catches for 74 yards and a score.
The Lobos possessed the ball two more times after the Wolf Pack went up 11 points, yet they failed to move the ball and convert critical third down plays.
Sophomore wide receiver Romeo Doubs was the player of the game for Nevada, with 11 catches for 167 yards and a touchdown. The Los Angeles, California, native set career-highs in catches and receiving yards.
The loss drops the Lobos to 2-7 on the season in another disappointing campaign for Bob Davie and his coaching staff. With Air Force and Boise State next up on the schedule, two of the best teams in the Mountain West Conference, UNM is in real danger of failing to win more than three games for the third consecutive season.
