UNM Football: Lobos return home to take on Air Force

The University of New Mexico Lobos (2-8) have now lost seven in a row with only two games remaining in the season. Things have not been pretty for head coach Bob Davie and his team, as they have yet to earn a win in conference play sitting at 0-6. Even if the Lobos were to win its final two games, they would still be short by two to be bowl eligible.

After losing on the road against Boise State (9-1) 42-9, UNM returns to Dreamstyle Stadium to face Air Force (8-2) on Saturday.

UNM’s defense could not stop the offensive powerhouse in Boise State as the Lobos’ gave up 238 rushing yards. The Broncos’ quarterback Jaylon Henderson went 15-for-28, for 294 yards, three touchdowns, an interception, and was sacked twice. Lobos’ very own Tevaka Tuioti threw 14-for-21, for 175 yards and was sacked four times.

Air Force currently sits in second place in the Mountain West, behind 20 nationally-ranked Boise State, with a 5-1 record in conference play. Since their loss against Navy, the Falcons have won five in a row while outscoring its opponents by a margin of 18.75 points.

Keys of the game the Lobos must focus on is stopping Air Force’s rushing game, which in its last four matches, has accumulated a total of 1414 rushing yards, which translates to 353.5 rush yards per game. A notable player UNM must keep an eye on is the Falcons’ Timothy Jackson, who, in their last four wins, is leading the team in rush yards with an average of 122.25 per game.

With the second to last game being against one of the conference’s top teams in Air Force, it will be interesting to see how head coach Bob Davie and his staff strategize to earn one more win before closing out 2019.

The game is set to kick off at 12 p.m. (MST) with live coverage still to be determined.
