The 2020 Dallas Cowboys offseason seems to be one that has the potential to impact the team in a positive way. The Jason Garrett Era was one that was a disappointment, to say the least, but it seems as if Jerry Jones and the front office finally came to the realization that a 2020 season without Garrett may move the team in the right direction. In his nine-year run with the Cowboys, Garret had an 85-67 record. However, he was only advanced to the postseason three times.
His replacement, Mike McCarthy is a seasoned coach that is very familiar with the postseason. In his thirteen seasons as the Packers coach, he won one Super Bowl, made it to the playoffs nine times with six division titles. This powerful Cowboys offense needs a coach that knows how to win, and that is what they are hoping to find in Mike McCarthy.
In addition to the shift with a new head coach, other coaches, including Rod Marinelli, the defensive coordinator was replaced by Mike Nolan, former linebacker coach for the New Orleans Saints. The Cowboys special teams will also have a new coach with the former Los Angeles Rams special teams coach John Fassel.
Dallas lost a handful of fan-favorite players to other teams during free agency including Byron Jones (CB) to the Miami Dolphins, Jason Witten (TE) to the Las Vegas Raiders, Robert Quin (DE) to the Chicago Bears, and Maliek Collins (DT) to the Las Vegas Raiders, Jeff Heath (S) to the Las Vegas Raiders, Randall Cobb (WR) to the Houston Texans and Travis Frederick (C), who retired from the NFL.
Even though many starters were lost, the Cowboys were able to obtain quite a few key players from free agency. Additions include a new backup quarterback in Andy Dalton from the Bengals. They also secured Gerald McCoy (DT) from the Carolina Panthers, Ha Ha Clinton Dix (S) from the Chicago Bears, Greg Zuerlein (K) from the Los Angeles Rams, and Dontari Poe (DT) from the Carolina Panthers. These players have the potential to be a bigger threat on the defensive side of the ball.
The Cowboys made some important moves in free agency, but they were also able to capitalize on the 2020 NFL Draft. The fresh talent includes CeeDee Lamb (WR) from Oklahoma, Trevon Diggs (CB) from Alabama, Neville Gallimore (DT) from Oklahoma, Reggi Robinson II (CB) from Tulsa, Tyler Biadasz (C) from Wisconsin, Bradlee Anae (DE) from Utah, and Ben DiNucci (QB) from James Madison. These players could potentially set up the Cowboys for what seems to be a very successful looking offseason.
Even though Dallas lost a couple of key players, they put forth a great effort to secure quality players from free agency and the 2020 NFL draft. These changes could carry the Cowboys into a winning 2020 season. The new changes are going to be vastly different in the 2020 season, and it might be the right kind of set up for a successful year and postseason.
