UNM’s season opener against CSU canceled

The University of New Mexico Lobos were set to play Colorado Springs this weekend to kick off an 8-game modified Mountain West Conference Schedule. According to UNM Director of Athletics Eddie Nuñez, the game has been canceled due to New Mexico State health orders.

Per Nuñez, the game will be declared a no-contest by the MWC, and the game will not be rescheduled.

The Mountain West Conference posted the following Tweet regarding the breaking news:

“Due to the prevalence of COVID-19 in Bernalillo County and in accordance with state guidelines, @UNMLoboFB is unable to participate in the game on Oct. 24 at @CSUFootball”

The Lobos are planning on playing their home opener against San Jose State on October 31st. Based on the recent increase in COVID-19 cases in the state, that game could be at risk of cancellation as well.
