Isaiah Chavez earns MWC offensive player of the week honors

True-freshman walk-on Isaiah Chavez helped the New Mexico Lobos beat the Wyoming Cowboys two weeks ago, ending a 14-game losing streak while securing the first win of the Danny Gonzales era of Lobo football.

The former Rio Rancho high star followed up that fantastic performance with another stellar game against the Fresno State Bulldogs. Chavez completed 14 of 18 passes for 196 yards and a touchdown while adding 96 yards and a score on the ground, leading UNM to a 49-39 victory.

For his amazing outing against the Bulldogs, Chavez earned Mountain West Conference offensive player of the week honors.

This is the second week in a row in which a Lobo earned POW honors. Brandon Shook won defensive POW last week for his 13-tackle game against Wyoming.

The Lobos appear to have found their coach for the long-term in Danny Gonzales and a diamond in the rough and possible starter for the 2021 season in Chavez.
