Rockies agree to trade Nolan Arenado to Cardinals

All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado has been the subject of trade rumors this offseason. The Los Angeles Dodgers and the Boston Red Sox were rumored to be interested in trading for the star third baseman, especially the Dodgers, who have an opening at third base with free agent Justin Turner on the open market.

Instead of Arenado joining the defending champion Dodgers or the Red Sox, the St. Louis Cardinals reached an agreement with the Rockies to send Arenado to join Paul Goldschmidt and the Cardinals for a collection of prospects.

According to Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, the deal is pending approval from the league and the players union, and the collection of prospects heading to the Rockies has not been confirmed.

Per Rosenthal, the Rockies are sending Arenado and $50 million to the Cardinals, and Arenado is going to defer some of his 8-year, $250 million contract that he signed in 2019.
