Lobos force overtime but come up short against Cowboys

Makuach Maluach posted a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds, and freshman Javonte Johnson hit a game-tying three-point shot in the closing minute to force overtime, but the Lobos were unable to come up with their second MWC victory of the season, falling to Wyoming 83-74 on Wednesday Night.

After trailing 33-29 at the break, UNM shot an impressive 64% from the floor in the second period and 67% from behind the arc, with no bigger three than the corner basket from Johnson with 29 seconds left in regulation to force the extra period.

Wyoming was led by a balanced attack of six players in double figures, led by freshman guard Marcus Williams with 17.

Although the Lobos were the better team on most metrics, including field goal percentage, rebounds, and points in the paint, the difference in the game proved to be Wyoming’s superior play in overtime and their advantage on points off turnovers.

The two evenly matched teams face off again on Friday on a neutral site in Colorado Springs.

The Lobos (1-12 in MWC, 5-12 overall) will then finish the season with a pair of games on the road against Air Force on 2/22/21 and 2/24/212.
