As the calendar turns to summer, the UNM athletics programs will begin to slow down, but there’s still news out of the university. This week, the school said goodbye to another former star and honored some of its outstanding student athletes.
Greg Brown, Former UNM Basketball Star, Passes Away
The University of New Mexico mourns the loss of Greg Brown, a former standout on the men’s basketball team, who passed away on June 13, 2024. Brown, a prominent figure in UNM’s basketball history from 1992-1996, was known for his incredible skills on the court and his leadership off it. He remains one of the top scorers in the program’s history, having led the Lobos to multiple NCAA tournament appearances. His legacy continues to inspire future generations of athletes at UNM.
UNM Tennis Players Receive Prestigious ITA Honors
In a celebration of academic and athletic excellence, UNM tennis players Manon Maes, Sarah-Lynne Chen, and Matthew Hoppe were honored by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Maes was named the ITA Mountain Region Senior Player of the Year, reflecting her outstanding performance throughout the season. Chen received the ITA Most Improved Senior award, showcasing her remarkable development. Hoppe was recognized as the ITA Rookie of the Year for his impressive debut season, highlighting the bright future of UNM’s tennis program.
Record-Breaking GPA Achievements for UNM Student-Athletes
The University of New Mexico’s student-athletes have set new academic records for the second consecutive semester. The department reported an overall GPA of 3.47 for Spring 2024, surpassing the previous record of 3.41. This achievement marks the 32nd consecutive semester with a departmental GPA of at least 3.0. Notably, the football team achieved a program-best 3.22 GPA under Coach Bronco Mendenhall. Female student-athletes led with an impressive 3.67 GPA, and 92 athletes achieved a perfect 4.0. These accomplishments underscore the commitment to academic excellence across all sports.
