Frank Maestas, a trailblazing sportswriter in New Mexico, left an indelible mark on sports journalism through his decades-long career. Born on October 6, 1935, in Las Vegas, New Mexico, Maestas became the first in his family to earn a college degree, graduating from New Mexico Highlands University in 1959 with a Bachelor’s in Political Science and Journalism.

Maestas launched his professional career at the Albuquerque Journal in 1960, distinguishing himself as one of the first Latino sportswriters in the United States. Over his 28-year tenure, he also served as a sports editor for the Santa Fe New Mexican and briefly taught history at Pojoaque High School. His contributions to sports journalism were marked by his passionate coverage of high school sports, the Albuquerque Dukes, and University of New Mexico athletics. Maestas’ efforts in promoting high school sports were particularly noteworthy, as he urged coaches to report game scores and compiled comprehensive box scores and statistics.

Throughout his career, Maestas garnered numerous accolades, including being named New Mexico Sportswriter of the Year three times and receiving the “Award of Distinction” from the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame. His legacy was cemented with his induction into the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame, a testament to his significant contributions to the field and the local community.

Frank Maestas passed away on March 8, 2006, leaving behind a legacy of excellence in sports journalism. His son, Antonio “Moe” Maestas, continues the family tradition of public service as a state senator in New Mexico.
