Lobo Round-Up May 21 – Key addition for men’s basketball

In what is becoming commonplace for the Lobos, the athletic program performed extremely well in competition and off the field made key announcements about new additions to the men’s basketball program.

The men’s golf team, led by standout Bastien Amat who tied for second place individually, secured their 44th appearance at the NCAA Championship by finishing fifth at the NCAA West Lafayette Regional. This prestigious tournament will be held May 24-29 at the OMNI La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California.

New Mexico Track & Field is well-represented at the NCAA Regional Preliminaries in Fayetteville, Arkansas this week. With twelve athletes competing, the Lobos are vying for spots at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon. This strong showing extends a program streak of sending at least 10 athletes to the NCAA Prelims for six consecutive years. Habtom Samuel is a top performer for the Lobos, currently ranked No. 2 in the West Region in both the 5,000m and 10,000m races. The competition kicks off on Wednesday, and fans can follow the Lobo runners via ESPN+ broadcasts and live results on GoLobos.com/TrackResults.

The Lobo men’s basketball program also bolstered its roster this week with the addition of Ibrahima Sacko, a transfer forward from Georgia Tech. The 6-6, 225-pound athlete brings three years of eligibility to the team. Last season with the Yellow Jackets, Sacko averaged 2.2 points and 2.7 rebounds per game, showcasing his defensive abilities. Head Coach Richard Pitino is impressed with Sacko’s versatility and sees a bright future for him with the Lobos. The Lobos’ success extends far beyond the court, with strong support from the Albuquerque community, a factor that undoubtedly played a role in Sacko’s decision to join the program.
